Owen-Monroe Amateur Radio Hamfest
Summary
The weather cooperated, the forums were excellent and five people became new hams.
The weather was so good that as many flee market vendors were outside as inside. Considering the cost was free for either in or out side, this is a good indication of the weather.
Forums
Unfortunately the first forum (Digital Communications) was cancelled since the presenter Larry Jones WB9FHP, of Paoli, had a medical relapse and was unable to attend. A card was signed by many of the hamfest attendees wishing his quick recovery.
Ray Andrews K9DUR of Terre Haute presented his forum to a group of hams that practically filled the forum room. He explained the Software Defined Radio advantages.
Hank Wolfla's forum went well as he described his 'dream station' located in a Greenwood cornfield that can be operated from anywhere in the world via the Internet. He has operated the station from as far away as Australia. Hank is from Greenwood and his amateur radio call is K9LZJ.
Emergency Communication Forum
The Emergency Communications forum by Owen County EMA director Jack White KC9OQK and Monroe County Maria Del Mar Carrasquillo American Red Cross Director of Emergency Services discussed the type of information the Red Cross needs to respond after emergencies such as those caused by weather. Other discussions considered the mutual aid agreements between county Emergency Communications groups.
Those who won the one of the seven door prizes were also very happy.
